The Anglophone Section is a financially self-supporting, non-profit-making organization within the school, providing six hours a week tuition in English (language, British/American literature, history and geography) for children who are either native speakers or particularly fluent second language speakers. Founded in 1979 in answer to the pressing need for an English language education in a rapidly expanding international community, the section aims to develop students' awareness and experience of English and the English-speaking cultures. Anglophone Section work goes on within the normal timetable of the host French school, all students thus following the regular French curriculum (leading ultimately to the Baccalauréat), but with six hours a week of Anglophone work. Courses are designed at every stage to develop oral, written and study skills to a high level and, where appropriate, students are prepared for GCE 'O' level exams and GCSE. Pupils normally enter for the Baccalaur‚at with International Option and are also able to prepare for SAT. Many students subsequently pursue their studies in British or North American universities. The teaching staff all hold British/American university degrees and teaching certificates, and have gained considerable practical experience prior to their arrival in France. All staff work closely together in providing pastoral care and arranging many extra-curricular activities. The current enrolment in the Section includes students from 22 different countries. The majority of students are bilingual in French and English, but where necessary special intensive French courses are provided at elementary and middle school level. There is a wide range of after-school activities including music, drama and art classes and, in summer, various sports events. High School students take part in international Model United Nations conferences. In addition, the Section has complete access to all facilities of the French school, i. e. gymnasium, recreation area, library, video-equipment and cafeteria. A large well-equipped sports complex is nearby. There is a comprehensive bus service for secondary age students. Admission is consequent upon the results of an entry test, a successful interview and reports from previous schools. |
