Study Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong KongThe Department of Electronic Engineering was founded in 1970 by Professor Charles Kao, an international renowned scientist, father of the optical fibre and former VC of The CUHK, and was the first to offer a work-study programme in Hong Kong.The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was founded in 1973 as the Department of Computer Science and was the first Computer Science department in Hong Kong. Its Computer Science major programme was the first outside the United Kingdom accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS). The Department of Information Engineering which was founded in 1989 was the first Information Engineering department in Hong Kong focusing on communication and Information Technology. The Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management was established in 1991 as the Department of Systems Engineering, the first of its kind to have a programme built on four major areas of E-Commerce Systems, Financial Engineering, Information Systems, and Logistics and Supply Chain Management. The four departments of Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Information Engineering and Systems Engineering were brought together to form the Faculty of Engineering in August, 1991. In September 1993, the Faculty moved into the modern Ho Sin Hang Engineering Building which is well-equipped with advanced laboratories and computing facilities. The Building has offered an ideal environment to staff members and students of the Faculty to support their teaching, research and learning activities. The Department of Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering (formerly called Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering) was established in 1994, and is the first of its kind in Hong Kong to emphasize interdisciplinary study of mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer science. The Faculty established the Information Networking Laboratories (INL) in 1996 as a pioneer effort to help technology transfer between academia and the industry in information areas. INL was restructured in January 1999 and renamed as Centre for Innovation and Technology (CINTEC) which aims to provide synergy to expand and intensify inter-departmental multi-disciplinary projects on emerging technologies, to elevate industrial liaison and collaboration, and to find ways to transfer technology to industry. The Joint Centre for Intelligence Engineering (JCIE) was inaugurated in March 1999 in the Faculty to foster the partnership between Peking University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong in supporting both basic and applied research, taking advantages of the the complementary strength of the two institutions. Researchers from the Faculty are actively involved in the research works of JCIE. The Centre for Biomedical Engineering of the The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Zhejiang University was established in the Faculty on August 1999 to facilitate basic and applied research in biomedical engineering, to promote the development of biomedical engineering industry and technologies for health care delivery, and to enhance research collaborations in the area of biomedical engineering for the advancement of scientific research, particularly in mainland China and Hong Kong. The Centre for the Advancement of E-Commerce Technologies (AECT) was established under the Faculty in November 1999 in collaboration with the Sun Microsystems. The objectives of the Centre are to foster the reseach in Internet and information systems technologies, enterprise solution technologies, and other emerging technologies related to e-commerce. The Centre also focuses its effort and resource on developing high-impact industrial applications and offer training opportunities for industry professionals to acquire the relevant skills in e-commerce. The CUHK- Elec and Eltek Technology Center was established in July 2000 in the Faculty with an aim to promote innovation, identifying niche areas and developing enabling technologies. It also acts as a reciprocal channel to enable technology transfers from the academia to the industry as well as the flow of new ideas from the industry to the academia. To cater for the rapid expansion of the Faculty's departments and programmes, the University has started the process of constructing a new Phase II Engineering Building adjacent to the existing Ho Sing Hang Engineering Building.
