American International School of BudapestThe American International School of Budapest is a co-educational,
private, not-for-profit, English-language day school providing a comprehensive
and challenging educational program to expatriate and Hungarian children
in Budapest. Founded in 1973, the school is governed by a Board of
Directors made up of appointed and elected parents. The students come
from 50 countries and approximately 20% are from the USA. The school
year begins in late August and ends in mid-June.
The American International School of Budapest occupies two purpose-built
campuses. The Lower Elementary school, serving grades pre-K-2, is
located in a residential area in the hills of Buda. The facility
includes 15 classrooms, computer lab, music room, art room, 200-seat
theater, library, gymnasium, swimming pool, cafeteria, nurse's clinic
and outdoor clay tennis courts and all-weather playgrounds. Grades 3-12 share the new Nagykovacsi campus in the lush suburban
hills just 13 kilometers from the center of Budapest. The award-winning
campus, completed in 2000, consists of 41 general classrooms, science
labs, three computer labs, band room, chorus room, drama/dance studio,
two art studios, 350-seat theater, black-box theater, library, two
gymnasiums, fitness center, swimming pool, cafeteria, nurses
clinic, and extensive outdoor fields, four clay tennis courts, outdoor
basketball court, and elementary playground, all located on a 10-hectare
plot. The educational program at American International School of Budapest
is based on best practices from American and international education,
and from pre-K to grade 12, it reflects the schools commitment
to educating the whole child. All children, pre-K-grade 8, study
science, mathematics, language arts, social studies, art, music,
physical education, computer and either Hungarian culture or foreign
language. The Lower Elementary program (pre-K-2) emphasizes language development,
whereas Upper Elementary (gr 3-5) adds a focus on developing learning
skills and habits that will enable students to transition effectively
to grade 6. The grade 6-8 program is based on the developmentally
appropriate middle school model, providing challenging yet engaging
learning experiences in core and exploratory subjects. The high
school program of studies is comprehensive, leading to the International
Baccalaureate in grades 11-12. Approximately 70% of students elect
to take IB courses, most of whom earn the IB Diploma English-as-a-second-language, resource room support and counseling
services are provided. There is a popular After-School-Activities program at the American
International School of Budapest, a full range of interscholastic
sports and cultural activities, including extensive trips in Hungary.
