Batu Hijau International School

Batu Hijau International School opened in September 1997 in temporary facilities in Mataram on the island of Lombok in Indonesia and serves the dependants of expatriates who are involved in the development of the Newmont Batu Hijau copper and gold mine on the nearby island of Sumbawa, Indonesia. Purpose-built facilities were opened on Sumbawa in August 1999. The Batu Hijau International School academic program is based on the Primary and Middle Years Programmes of the International Baccalaureate. It is consistent with the best practice developed by Australian and US teachers who have experience in international schools. Supporting materials are provided by Australia's Northern Territory Department of Education and suppliers of US educational materials. Indonesian culture and language is included in the curriculum. The school currently operates a forty-week, two semester school year. Each semester is divided into two ten week terms. Mid-semester breaks are of two weeks duration. At the end of each semester the school has a four-week break. These longer breaks occur in December/January and June/July and are designed to coincide with both northern hemisphere summer holidays.
