North Jakarta International School

North Jakarta International School was chartered in January 1990 and later licensed by the Indonesian Ministry of Education to provide schooling for expatriate students temporarily residing in Jakarta. It operates as a not-for-profit social foundation and is overseen by a six-member appointed Board of Governors. North Jakarta International School is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS) and is accredited by ECIS. North Jakarta International School currently has 340 students from 25 nations. The school uses a US-based international school curriculum for students from four through fifteen years of age. Most of the books and resources are imported from the United States. However, a variety of teaching strategies is employed, and the curriculum reflects current thinking from Western educational methodology and philosophy. Core subject teachers are from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. Local-hire Western-trained Indonesian teachers teach Bahasa Indonesia and host-country culture. Students who will turn four years old by 31 October are eligible to enter Pre-Kindergarten in August. Students who turn five years old by 31 October are eligible for Kindergarten in August, and so on. The school accommodates students up through the tenth grade. The North Jakarta International School facilities include more than 40 purpose-built, air-conditioned classrooms in six main buildings. There is a 400-seat theatre; a gymnasium with a climbing wall, dance studio, and weight-training room; playing fields for soccer, baseball, and cricket: a well-maintained 25-meter five-lane swimming pool; two computer labs; two science labs; a music room; a music/piano lab; and a library with more than 10, 000 volumes. Speciality teachers include English-as-a Second Language, French, Bahasa Indonesia, art, computer, music, instrumental music, and physical education. North Jakarta International School does not have a special program for students with learning disabilities. Admission is open only to students likely to succeed within the context of the regular program. The North Jakarta International School year starts in August and ends in June. There is a three-week break at Christmas and a one-week break in March; various national holidays are also observed. Waiting lists occur at some grade levels, and early application is encouraged.
