Kylemore Abbey School Ireland

Our parents, alumni and students tell us that the combination of a challenging, student-centered curriculum and a friendly supportive environment makes Kylemore Abbey School and outstanding place for overseas students wishing to learn English, or to perfect an already established foundational knowledge of the language.

The prospectus shows, in word and pictures, a little of the riches presented to our girls.

An all-girl, seven-day Boarding School, Kylemore is at pains to allow its students to study English with expert tuition and guidance, individual and group tuition, and an exposure to the spoken language that provides opportunity for the keen student and stimulation for the shy or insecure.

There is the opportunity to students to attend all second-level classes, thus keeping abreast of their subjects, while taking in-depth tuition in the language under trained teachers.

There is the opportunity to work with computers, to take Speech and Drama lessons, to avail of the special outings arranged to allow the girls to see our country and learn to shop and view places of interest, all within a supervised and happy environment.

CLASSES:  Special English Classes cater for beginners; Those with little or no knowledge of language.  Intermediate; Those with a foundation knowledge desiring to

  • acquire fluency and proficiency.  Advanced; those wishing to perfect their skills

  • to participate in the full Secondary programme; taking public examinations;Junior certificate and Leaving certificate (Entry to University Level).

EMPHASIS:   An emphasis on student-centred curriculum at all levels where students are

  • taught to THINK!  No student is allowed to meander along; students are taught

  • to take responsibility in and out of class, they are expected to work; supervised study ensures that assignments are attended to and that weak students are noted and helped.

A broad-based sports programme encourages girls to make use of the all weather pitch and the splendid grounds, while dance and gymnastics are practised in the gymnasium whatever the weather.

Overseas students are an integral part of the school.  They are encouraged to take part in all school activities, Concerts, Drama, Parents-Day Displays and exhibitions etc. They contribute to the School Magazine and take part in Cycle-rides to raise funds for Charities, go with their class on Orienteering week-ends etc.

Sports include Net Ball, Hockey, Tennis, Badminton, Soccer and Horse-Riding.  Gymnastics and Dance present opportunity for group and individual competitive work.

KYLEMORE ABBEY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Class-sizes average fifteen to twenty students at senior level with a twenty-five average up to and including Junior certificate (Third Year).

The emphasis here is on the development of a young person prepared and enthusiastic to meet the challenges of our world.  She must be academically confident, and possess the ability to take initiative, to approach new opportunities with excitement but with a measure of prudence- aware of the challenge and in a position to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of any given project and secure in her conviction that the right use of intelligence and the direction of sound values must bring self-fulfillment and satisfaction.

The Benedictine approach is one of openess and wonder.  The world presents the young person with a mystery and a challenge.  Advances in the area of the sciences greatly enrich and challenge.  In our school computer studies rub shoulders with the exploration of the Classics, showing by experience, that one compliments the other.

A Catholic School with a difference, Kylemore Abbey has, from time to time, had a wonderful mix of denominations- all living an enrichment, and learning a tolerance that has extended far beyond school-days.  Hindu and Muslim, Protestant and Jew, girls of all denominations and of none- all are welcomed and find here an acceptance and a warmth, a genuine respect for them, that does much to assure and re-assure, that the world can be a place of peace and of opportunity- provided their vision is neither prejudiced nor closed.

Because of the school's long experience in dealing with overseas students, all travel arrangements and details of holiday stays with families, etc. are taken care of with ease and efficiency.  The School must be vacated during all breaks and the cost of these breaks must be incurred by the parents/guardian of the student.

Our overseas students learn to love Kylemore and Ireland, and form lasting friendships with their peers and the Teaching and Supervisory Staff.
