Study at the Asian Institute of Medicine Malaysia
The
Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST), founded on
15 March 2001, is a private university established
by
the Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED), the educational
arm of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), a component party of the
Barisan Nasional Government in Malaysia.
Located in the northern
Malaysian state of Kedah Darul Aman, the university is the brainchild of
YB Dato' Seri S.Samy Vellu, Minister of Works, and President of the MIC.
Interim
Campus Facilities
Computer
Labs
AIMST
is committed to providing the best and most cost-effective
computing and communication infrastructure for the University
community. While the latest state-of-the-art technologies will be
incorporated into the IT environment at the main campus now under
construction at Semeling, no efforts will be spared to
continuously upgrade the present IT resources of the University at
its interim Amanjaya campus.
The
Main
Building
houses a Server room and three Computer Labs equipped with several
Pentium IV personal computers networked to run on Windows 2000
Professional operating system.
Multimedia
Lab
is primarily used for Information Technology and Computer Science
classes under the Matriculation programme. The Lab has 10
workstations with Pentium IV processors.
Common
Computer Lab
is for the use of AIMST staff and students. It is open Monday
through Friday from
8.00
am
to
8.00
pm
.
The Lab will also be opened on Saturdays if there are strong
demands for it. There are 18 Pentium III microcomputers in this
Lab.
Language
Labhas 26 Pentium III computers and is dedicated for English Language
studies. The computers here have been installed with special
purpose software.
The
Main
Building
also has a CAD-CAM
Laboratory intended for use by Engineering degree students.
Several workstations and Pentium IV computers are placed here
along with 10 Apple iMac 500 MHz G3 computers for specialised
work.
The
South Wing facing the

also has a Generic
Computer Lab with some 30 networked Pentium IV computers and
supported by a server for use largely by Computer Science and
Information Technology degree students.
All
students have access to the Internet and e-mail using Leased Line,
ISDN lines and Wireless LAN.
Library
The
spacious (259.20 m2) air-conditioned Library is
situated on the first floor of the Main Building and is equipped
with a wide range of recommended texts and references pertaining
to the taught courses, both Matriculation and Degree. Students
also have online access to the LexisNexis
Libraryand OVID
database. Other resource materials include audio-visual
equipment, computer assisted learning (
CAL
)
courseware and productivity tools, magazines, periodicals and
Standards. Routine Library services include xerox, bindery
services, inter-library loans, and reference services (S&T
information, addresses of manufacturers and of R&D
institutions).
Auditorium
The
auditorium on the ground floor of the Main Building has a gallery
seating capacity for 150 persons.
It is well equipped with quality sound system and has
adequate facilities for multimedia presentations.
Prayer
Rooms Two
large and functionally designed prayer rooms, one for men and the
other for ladies, each covering an area of 16.56 sq metres are
provided by AIMST for Muslim staff and students to perform their
daily prayers.
Accommodation
AIMST
provides hostel facilities for outstation and overseas students.
The hostels are situated at Bandar Laguna Merbok in close
proximity to the interim campus and comprise of several double-storey
link houses rented and fully furnished by AIMST for student use,
mostly on a twin sharing basis per bedroom. Bandar Laguna Merbok
has recreational facilities to promote a healthy and pleasant
lifestyle for students.
Hostel
students pay a flat rate of RM 400 (or RM 500, if they occupy
single
rooms)
per month that is inclusive of 3 meals a day at AIMST Cafeteria
and free bus transportation provided by the University.
Cafeteria
AIMST
runs a cafeteria catering for staff and students on the ground
floor of the South Wing.
Transportation
The
facility is limited to students staying in hostels provided by
AIMST. University fleet buses ply at set times between the hostels
and the campus/ Sungai Petani town centre.
Other
facilities
One
entire floor (area: 1,152 sq.ft.) of the South Wing at Level 3 has
been provided for use as Student
Activities Room and is air-conditioned.
An
air-conditioned Student
Study Area has also been designated on the floor immediately
below the Student Activities Room.
A
basketball court, a netball court and two tennis courts are
currently under construction in the open space immediately behind
the
Main
Building
