Learning Support Programme
Arnhem International School, offering a primary and secondary international education, is situated between the two cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen. It is easily accessible by road and public transport. The Secondary Department is part of the larger Lorentz Lyceum, a Dutch comprehensive school with a large bilingual population (English/Dutch) which caters for pupils 12-19 years of age. AIS Secondary Department is an IB World school and offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme to pupils of 12-16 years. The IB Diploma Programme is offered to students who have successfully completed the MYP or similar education elsewhere. The curriculum allows for differentiation and although a working knowledge of English is required for all subjects, support lessons in English and Dutch are offered when possible. A wide range of enrichment activities in discrete subjects and in special assignments, together with a variety of extracurricular activities and special projects, form an integral part of the school programme. Fieldwork, Europe-wide visits, the Model United Nations, workshops, sports and theatre visits are embedded in the system. The school is particularly aware of the importance of internationalisation and aims to promote this by including Language and Cultural Awareness as part of the curriculum. A special programme for mother tongue acquisition is being developed. The school values close contact with parents. The International Parents Council helps organise various activities and takes part in discussions on curricular development.
An active Student Council enriches the school's climate through discussion and action. The international character of the school is further reflected in its faculty of native English speakers and teachers from countries within and outside the European Union. They have an excellent command of English, a thorough knowledge of the programmes and a deep understanding of the needs of internationally mobile children, ensuring high academic standards and intensive pastoral care and counselling. Note: AIS Primary Department is in a separate building within close walking distance from the Secondary. It is part of the Aletta Jacobs School, a Dutch primary school for pupils 4-12 years of age. The Primary Department subscribes to the same values and standards as the Secondary Department and offers an English language curriculum that combines the UK system and the International Primary Curriculum. The Primary Department has an annexe over the border in Goch/Germany.
