University of Canterbury
The University of
Canterbury is located in Christchurch, the largest city in New
Zealand's South Island.
Christchurch is close
to both the sea and mountains
>The university's
modern and well-equipped facilities are spread across a
spacious campus,
with easy access to
central city. Known as
the Garden City, Christchurch has excellent beaches, parks,
reserves and golf courses, and is close to scenic and
recreational resources - there are ski-fields within an hour and
a half's drive.
>The University of
Canterbury is also part of the
Canterbury
Tertiary Alliance, comprising Lincoln
University, Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology and
the Christchurch College of Education. The CTA goal is the
coordinated development and provision of tertiary education in
Canterbury.
Canterbury Study
The University of
Canterbury offers a wide variety of
subjects in
flexible
degree structures.
We offer first and postgraduate degrees in
Arts,
Commerce,
Education,
Engineering,
Fine Arts,
Forestry,
Law,
Music and
Science.
>At Canterbury,
research and
teaching are closely related, and are encouraged at the
postgraduate
level. Our assessment is also distinctive. We have a system of
internal appraisals, which supplement the end-of-year
examinations, and provide essential feedback.
Canterbury People
The University of
Canterbury and the
UCSA (Students
Association) both recognise the importance of a
rich campus culture
and leading a balanced life while studying at Canterbury. We
enjoy and foster
alumni
contacts and also have extensive international links. There are
many services on campus available to
international students.
The English
Language Centre
>The English Language
Centre provides ideal preparation for study at Foundation,
Undergraduate or Postgraduate degree level. All of our courses
are designed to provide students with the specific language and
study skills needed to succeed in academic study. Although most
students are planning to continue on with their academic career
at the University of Canterbury, it is also possible to come to
the Language Centre for English study alone and then move on to
another institution later.
What
are the advantages of choosing to come to our English Language
Centre?
- Absolutely top quality teaching. All of our
teachers have university degrees, as well as specialist
qualifications and extensive experience in teaching English
as a second language. High quality teaching means you will
develop your English proficiency and achieve your study
goals as fast as possible.
- You will
be a university student from the first day you arrive. You will have access to all university student facilities
such as: computer labs, language labs, the library, student
support, medical centre, the student union, sports
facilities.
- Full
integration into the University community. The
Centre's teaching occurs in rooms across the campus -often
the same study spaces that you will use when you move on to
degree study. This helps you feel part of the University and
encourages you to mix with degree students. All teaching
rooms are well equipped and spacious. This is important for
group work and to help interaction and learning.
- Small
classes and close interaction with your teachers. The maximum class size is 14 students. This means you work
closely with your teacher.
- Seamless
pathways into Foundation and degree study. Once an
offer of place conditional on English language has been
obtained, the Centre offers seamless pathways into your
further study, without the anxiety and frustration of
further external examinations such as IELTS or TOEFL.
Our
students also like New Zealand and like Christchurch!
- They like the
friendly and welcoming people.
- They enjoy the
high quality living conditions.
- They like
Christchurch, 'The Garden City'. It is big enough to always
have something new and exciting happening, great shopping,
and many recreational and cultural activities, but compact
enough to be able to get around quickly and easily.
- They love the
natural beauty of New Zealand, how easy it is to get out of
the city into the countryside, and how close the University
is to some of the world-renowned national parks and tourist
attractions of the Southern Island of New Zealand.
- They appreciate
the moderate cost of education and of living in New Zealand.
- They recognise
the safe and conducive study environment that the city and
the Centre provides, and the safeguards that the University
and the New Zealand government have put in place to ensure a
safe and high quality educational experience in New Zealand.
