Best International Schools in Nigeria
Grange School is an 'all through' years 4 to 16 day and residential
School in which pupils, teachers and
parents, work and learn together.
Grange operates as a not-for-profit, co-educational, English National
Curriculum, independent,
day school set on beautiful grounds within the Government Reservation
Area (GRA), Ikeja, on the
mainland part of Lagos in Nigeria. An off-campus “House” has been
included to provide a
boarding service to parents and pupils. Our spacious campus includes a
variety of well
maintained facilities which create an attractive environment for
learning.
Grange School was founded in 1958 by a group of well-meaning British
expatriates, to provide
education of equivalent standard to that which obtains in the UK.
As part of the 40th anniversary in September 1998, the Board felt it was
time to add a secondary
school for continuity and stability in the education of the pupils.
Our Primary Phase prepares pupils for the Key Stage 2 Check Point
examinations.
Our secondary school therefore continues into Key Stage 3 culminating in
the Checkpoint Exams
and Key Stage 4 which culminates in the IGCSE (International General
Certificate of Secondary
Education). All three exams are under the auspices of the University of
Cambridge Local
Examination Syndicate (UCLES).
Grange School's population is projected as 430 girls and boys in the
Primary Section which is from Reception class to Year 6, between the
ages of 4 and 11.There are 326 pupils in the secondary phase being, Year
7 to Year 11, between the ages of 11 and 16. The School Policy maintains
a class size of 18.The aim of this policy is to ensure that a family
ethos is maintained in the school and that at Grange every child is
known as an individual. We take pride in our enduring legacy for the
provision of a child oriented atmosphere and our aim is to promote
matured self-discipline
citizens.
Grange encourages every pupil to discover their own strengths, whether
they are academic,
sporting, musical or creative. Academic standards are a priority, but we
also believe that by
educating the whole child we can bring out the best in each and every
individual. A vital part of
our education presentation is teaching to think independently and
creatively. Our pupils are
challenged to question, analyse and debate, forming their own opinions,
yet upholding an attitude
of respect towards others.
The school is one of only three in Nigeria to be accredited by the Uk’s
Independent Association of
Preparatory Schools. (IAPS).
The school’s Patron is the Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria.
Curriculum
The school operates the English National Curriculum and prepares pupils
for the Standard Attainment Tests - Key Stages 1, 2 & 3 and the IGCSE.
All the subjects of the English National Curriculum are offered and each
pupil is expected to take a minimum of eight subjects at IGCSE.
Pupils must be 4+ years old by the September of the year of admission
into the Reception class and 11+ years old by September of the year of
admission into Year 7. Admission is open to every successful candidate
irrespective of their national, ethnic or religious background. Class
size is kept small to ensure pupils receive individual attention necessary
for a good education.
The school stresses educational breadth, so pupils are provided with
an environment in which they can develop intellectually, socially and
spiritually, helping them to move from childhood to adulthood in such
a way that they will be able to take their places in society as successful,
responsible, hardworking, compassionate and sensitive people.
There is a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities and pupils are
encouraged to pursue interests beyond their studies. Pupils travel widely
for competitions and participation in various games and activities with
other international schools locally and overseas is a regular part of
school life.
Parents and pupils at the school have high expectations. They expect
to achieve good academic results as a passport to higher education and
a future career.
Graduation
The majority of pupils who graduate from Grange at 11+, 13+ and 16+ move
onto to public schools in the UK. The school has teacher exchange links
with some of these institutions and is currently seeking to partner with
a British public school in a new venture to establish a Grange sixth
form college on the islands here in Lagos. This would become the first
of its nature on the African continent.
Recent social, political and economic circumstances of Nigeria have made
international teacher recruitment more challenging but the Board has
continued to seek UK trained and qualified teaching staff. Staff
turnover at grange is very low. A survey of staff conducted in 2013
indicated that 97% of all teachers felt ‘proud’ to work at Grange. The
school sends its staff on training conferences to the UK and also brings
in British training agencies annually to deliver top quality CPD to
teaching and administrative staff alike.
As well as implementing the curriculum for England, assessments are
based on national standards from the UK. The schools four house system
provides an English traditional school base as a medium for competition
in many activities some of which are intrinsically British in nature.
Thus the importance of extra-curricular provision including clubs, and
school trips are reminiscent of best British practice. Most text-books,
materials, educational equipment and software are sourced from the UK.
Classroom management, styles of pedagogy and associated practices,
displays of work, the three term year and age related groups contribute
to the British feel of the school. The lesson change bell sounding as
the chimes of ‘Big Ben’ clearly reinforce this! Parents are
appreciative and approve of the British nature of the school.
In late 2013 the British Deputy High Commissioner agreed to become the
school’s Patron. In early 2014 the Board agreed that the school should
align itself with the standards and expectations of the Council of
British International Schools and soon after it was admitted as a
member. The ‘Britishness’ of accreditation was swiftly followed up by
the Principal/CEO being admitted as a member of the Independent
Association of Prep Schools. He is also a school Inspector with a UK
inspection agency.
