Learning Support Programme
St Julian's School, founded 1932, is a co-educational and non-profit-making school run by a Board of Governors and the Headmaster, whose management team includes Secondary and Primary Principals, the Head of the Portuguese section, and the Business Manager.
The school is situated 15km from central Lisbon, within easy reach of the Lisbon/Cascais Railway and close to the sea. Its buildings are adapted from an 18th century palace, subsequently used by the Cable and Wireless Company.
There are two 'sides' to the school, Portuguese and International. The Portuguese side follows the national system of education from age five to fifteen. The larger International side includes Primary and Secondary Schools for children aged 4 to 18. It follows an adapted version of the English national curriculum up to age 16, when (I)GCSE examinations are taken. Students then prepare for University by following the International Baccalaureate Diploma course. Minumum requirement for admission to the IB Diploma course is six pass (A* to C) grades at (I)GCSE, or equivalent from other systems of Secondary education. Some sixty students are awarded the IB Diploma each year.
Facilities include a theatre/gymnasium, and two small gymnasia, two libraries, six science labs, art rooms, a design and technolgy centre, four tennis/basketball courts, and playing fields of natural and artificial turf: soccer, basketball, rugby, volleyball and athletics are the major school sports. Theatre and Music flourish: instrumental tuition is available at school. Cooked lunches are provided in the two dining rooms for those who wish it.
Portuguese students from the majority of the student body, followed by British and usually some 59 other nationalities. On the International side, staff are trained and have experience in the UK or other Anglophone countries. The average size of Primary and Secondary classes is 21, (12 in IB classes). Immersion courses in English are available and there is support for EAL students and for those with Special Educational Needs throughout the school.
The school year runs from early September to the end of June and includes the usual breaks at Christmas and Easter.
Admission above the nursery level is dependent upon satisfactory reports from previous schools and an interview with the relevant Principal.
