Border Technikon
South Africa
The
modern custom-designed Main Campus is situated at Potsdam, midway between East London and King Williams Town, adjacent to the N2
Highway.
The
geographical situation in the Border region makes high level
vocational education accessible to students who would otherwise have
left the Eastern Cape to study elsewhere, many never to return. The
drain of young talent from our region is thus being curtailed.

Entrance
to the campus, which forms a part of the beautiful Eastern
Cape countryside, is gained via the old East London/King
William's Town road i.e. Old Berlin Road

Starting
as the Ciskei Technikon and resulting from the promulgation of the
Ciskei Technikon Act No. 15 of 1984, academic programmes commenced in
January 1988. The first intake of 66 students was accommodated in the
Wongama Building at Zwelitsha, a building which had previously housed
the senior government departments of the region prior to the
establishment of Bisho as the seat of Government for Ciskei. Initially
only certificate courses were offered, but in mid 1989, diploma
courses were introduced and more courses have been offered to meet
regional requirements during successive years. The
modern buildings and lush surrounding landscape of the Potsdam Campus
are a far cry from the humble beginnings at Zwelitsha. Every detail
has been carefully planned to create an environment conducive to study
and learning, whilst ensuring that the campus buildings enhance the
countryside. Extensive landscaping has, at a modest cost, transformed
the grounds from grazing farmland into well-kept lawns and planted
areas. A natural spring and dam around which the Campus was designed
has been expanded to provide a recirculating water feature and
fountain as a focal centrepiece. This campus was officially opened in
1997. At this joint ceremony the first Chancellor, the Premier of the
Eastern Cape, Rev. M.A. Stofile and Vice-Chancellor and Principal,
Prof L.R. Brunyee, were inaugurated and approximately 400 students
graduated at the first Graduation Ceremony. The
buildings were constructed from traditional materials requiring low
maintenance, but are of a modern style. The building design and layout
sought to reflect the distinctive nature of technikon education and
the Border Technikon in particular, whilst at the same time blending
into the surrounding countryside. The result is a development
providing modern functional facilities which enhance the natural
beauty of the surrounding landscape. Accommodation
for students is provided in residences. These residences are filled to
capacity each semester, thus providing accommodation for 400
residential students.

On-campus
recreational facilities provide for entertainment and relaxation of
the students. Twenty different sports are played by technikon
students, the most popular being soccer, netball, tennis and rugby.
Indoor as well as outdoor sports can be accommodated. For indoor
sports such as basketball, volleyball, karate and aerobics, extensive
use is made of the Great Hall, which can also be used for formal
functions and has a seating capacity of 800. A
Campus Health Services Unit has been established over the years as
part of the Department of Student Affairs. The Health Services Unit is
in a process of continuous development in response to the health needs
of the students. National and international guidelines concerning
Student Health Services are followed in this process. The
Border Technikon attracts students from a large area of the Eastern
Cape Province. Whilst most students live in the vicinities of East
London and King William's Town, many are drawn from as far afield as
Port Elizabeth, Queenstown and Umtata. School leavers who were
previously forced to leave the Border region, now have facilities
which are more conveniently situated, thereby offering more affordable
study opportunities. This has in turn assisted local commerce and
industry to recruit qualified people within the region with direct
benefits to the Eastern Cape Province. In
collaboration with other technikons, as part of its strategic plan,
the Border Technikon established satellite campuses in East London and
Bisho to cater for specific needs within the Eastern Cape boundaries,
in keeping with its market related strategy. The Faculty of Applied
Technology was officially opened in East London in 1998.
There are also two campuses situated in the city of East
London, College Street Campus and Cambrige Street Campus

Border
Technikon feels confident that it will therefore enjoy expansion in
keeping with the region's growing demand for high quality tertiary
vocational education, in order to support the well-being of the
Eastern Cape Province. In
keeping with market related demand and regional requirements, Border
Technikon will expand the scope of courses offered to include the
scientific and technological needs of industry.
