The British International College

Exclusive

The British International College South Africa aims to provide students of above average academic ability with a learning environment in which their potential can be realized.

International

Working through the Cambridge International Examination syllabuses at the College where they are taught in small classes by highly qualified and experienced lecturers, students have the opportunity to secure their future by developing the skills and knowledge that students of similar age are developing all over the world.

Informal

Studying in a safe, informal college environment, students mature and become highly motivated. The social and communication skills so essential to success in any career today are given full opportunity to develop. Accelerated learning techniques and study skills are taught to enhance academic abilities.

Flexible

The Cambridge system is highly flexible, allowing a unique curriculum to be designed for each individual student. The examinations held in June and November each year, are set and marked at the University of Cambridge International Examinations Syndicate in the United Kingdom and the qualifications are conferred by this prestigious educational institution.

Challenging

The Cambridge philosophy of education not only provides students with knowledge and skills but encourages them to apply these to the real world in a critical and independent way. The courses are demanding and challenging and thoroughly prepare students for University study and for the demands of modern life.

Personal development

Designed to develop students'potential to its fullest, this programme engages them in physical and creative activities as well as speed-reading, philosophy and community service. Students are able to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh/President's Award, a highly desirable asset for an applicant to University. Students are offered the opportunity to gain real world work experience in order to help them plan their future. Guidance for tertiary studies and careers is offered.  Cambridge IT skills and Thinking skills certification is available.

Professional

British International College has been fortunate to retain the services of Mrs. Margaret Oshry (B.A; UED; B. Ed; M. Ed) as Dean of the College. This well-known educationist, previously head of teaching practice at the Johannesburg College of Education, comes with several years of experience in the establishment and management of Cambridge courses. The Director of Studies is widely recognized as an expert on mathematics and science education.

Courses offered:

Foundation course - Students of 13 to 14 years of age who may have completed grades 7 or 8 are introduced to a wide range of subjects in order to give them maximum flexibility of choice for their future direction. They sit the Cambridge Checkpoint examinations in November, which are designed to ensure that our students are on a par with students of equivalent age elsewhere in the world in the vital subjects of Mathematics, Science and English.

IGCSE (The International General Certificate of Secondary Education = O Levels)  Students of 15 to 17 years of age who have completed the Foundation course or grades 9 or 10 normally choose 6 - 9 subjects at this level. These should include English first language, a second language, Mathematics and/or Science. Students may opt to spend 1 or 2 years preparing for these examinations which provide an internationally recognized school leaving qualification.

A Levels (General Certificate of Education = Advanced Level)  Students of 16 years of age and above who have already obtained the IGCSE or a South African Matric study these as the finest preparation and most widely accepted entrance qualification for university anywhere in the world. Internationally, depending upon the University, anything from 2 to 4 subjects may be required for admission. It should be noted that the academic standard of A Levels is equivalent to a South African 1st year university course. Students normally take 2 years to prepare for A Level examinations. The International AS levels examination, equivalent to half an A Level, is normally sat at the end of the first year. Students may attend a South African University with these qualifications.

Note:   Capable and highly motivated students may be able to undertake an accelerated programme.

Post Matric Programme

British International College offers a full British high school curriculum as well as a prestigious Post Matric programme for both local and foreign students. This Post Matric A-level course is essential for students who wish to study abroad and can put students a year ahead when attending local universities. We encourage students and parents to visit us and participate in our lectures at their convenience to get a taste of life on a College campus.

A-levels meets the needs of four types of student:

1. Bright, ambitious students seeking access to international tertiary institutions or wanting to improve their chances of admission to courses like medicine, veterinary science, actuarial science, engineering, law and psychology at top South African universities.

2. Students who have ability but need to upgrade their Matric results. A-levels can replace South African Matric symbols or supplement them. Students can also take a full set of AS levels (half A-levels) to gain entry to University or Technikon in South Africa.

3. Students who are unsure of what further study to undertake. By sampling new subject areas in A-levels, they find direction while at the same time upgrading their academic skills. Such students are greatly advantaged as they have adapted to College and varsity life while on a small, friendly campus. In addition, most South African universities give credit for A-levels as an equivalent to first year subjects so the first year of their degree is often effectively completed.

4. Students who know what further study they wish to undertake but do not yet feel ready for University. A year at BIC provides an ideal bridge between school and University because the College offers campus student life in a smaller, sheltered environment plus the upgrading of academic skills. Most SA Universities give credit for subjects at A-level so student have not wasted a year.

KADER ASMAL REINFORCES CAMBRIDGE PHILOSOPHY ??

Professor Kader Asmal stated that the strategic objective of the government in higher education is to produce graduates who are well-rounded and thoroughly grounded; who are skilled and competent; who are creative, flexible and adaptive to new challenges; who are adept in critical thinking and cultural literacy; who are enabled and empowered to participate fully in their economy, their society and their globalising world.

This quote was published in a recent newspaper and neatly summarises the Cambridge and BIC philosophy! At British International College we are very conscious of preparing our students properly for university, both local and international.
FELLOWSHIP STATUS

On 23 August 2003 Ms Joyce Campbell, the Regional Director (Africa), University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, Cambridge, United Kingdom, made the following announcement:

I am delighted to inform you that your centre has been awarded Cambridge International Fellowship Centre status. I hope you will be pleased to note that your centre is one of only a few Cambridge International Centres worldwide to be granted this prestigious status.

This is in recognition of the work British International College (South Africa) does in promoting the Cambridge philosophy.

We strive to achieve this both in the tuition we offer and in the way the ethos of the College contributes to the development of our students who become thinking, independent 21st century citizens of the world. The BIC owners, management and staff are thrilled to receive this coveted recognition, akin to a hotel being awarded 5 stars, and look forward to refining and enhancing BIC with the assistance of our wonderful students and parents.

Distance Education That Works

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to British International Distance College (BIDC). We are proud to have been selected by the University of Cambridge to offer this unique opportunity to provide you with up to date, quality distance learning education of the highest international standards.

On completion of your selected course you will have a Cambridge University International qualification. BIDC students will write examinations set and marked by the Cambridge University in the U.K. and have ongoing support throughout the year from the highly experienced and successful British International College tutors in Johannesburg.

WHY BRITISH INTERNATIONAL DISTANCE COLLEGE?

The British International Distance College has been providing distance tuition in Cambridge qualifications for a number of years. We are a fully approved Cambridge examination and tuition centre and our students have produced spectacular results year after year. In fact, we have had students obtain results in the WORLD TOP 10 and consequently obtain full scholarships to the likes of Oxford and Harvard universities!

We have more than 40 permanent lecturing staff on hand for queries, who are arguably the most highly qualified and experienced in the country. Add to this our week by week work plan, regular workshops, additional study material as well as unlimited telephonic support and it becomes clear that the British International Distance College is the premier institute for secondary distance education in South Africa.

ABOUT DISTANCE EDUCATION

Distance education is the term given to the provision of education to students usually via correspondence or some other means of distance communication. With the rapid developments in technology and communication in recent history, distance education is now, more than ever, a completely viable and realistic alternative to conventional full time study.

A qualification obtained through a reputable provider of distance education, is just as respected and widely recognised as it would be, had it been obtained through attendance at a conventional educational institution.

HOW OUR DISTANCE COURSES WORK

As with any form of academic endeavour, the results one can expect, are directly dependant on the degree of commitment and effort one puts in. This is especially true with regards to distance education. Once the study material has been received by mail (or collected in person), it will be up to the student to follow the study programme suggested and meet the assignment deadlines. Our tutors will mark and return any assignments submitted by due date and will be available for discussion and guidance. The student is of course welcome to contact us at any point during their studies with queries and questions regarding the course.

In addition workshops in various subjects will be held during the year. Although attendance at these workshops is optional, it is obviously highly recommended, as they cover exam preparation and particularly difficult areas of the study material.
