FACULTY OF ECONOMIC & BUILDING SCIENCES
Tourism
is providing an ever increasing contribution to economic growth and new
employment opportunities in South Africa. Internationally, tourism is
competitive business. The
Centre for Tourism Studies invites you to explore the exciting world of
travel & tourism by registering for the one-year full-time BCom
Honours (Tourism) programme or the two-year part-time programme at the
University of Port Elizabeth. The purpose of the qualification is to provide students
who have completed a BCom or a BA majoring in Economics or Business
Management with an opportunity to steer their careers towards tourism.
Students who have a National Diploma or equivalent qualification coupled
with relevant experience may also apply.
The
BComHons (Tourism) programme will provide students with a
multi-disciplinary and exciting learning experience.
The
programme is underpinned with a strong value commitment to supporting
sustainable tourism development through social responsibility,
environmental responsibility, and economic responsibility.
The
programme will equip students with appropriate knowledge, values and
skills enabling them to develop as entrepreneurs, managers, researchers,
marketers, teachers and strategists in the tourism sector anywhere in
the world.
Tourism is a
remarkable industry capable of developing and diversifying the economic
base of countries, regions, cities and small towns if it is properly
managed. While there are
significant investments made by large companies in the tourism industry,
the sector is underpinned by myriads of small businesses. For aspiring
entrepreneurs, there are relatively few barriers of entry compared to
other industries. It is
labour intensive with employment opportunities at all skill levels thus
providing a major source of job creation.
Tourism can
contribute to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage as
tourists value such assets. In
this regard, tourism provides valuable funds for conservation, the
balanced utilisation of resources and support for sustainable
development. Tourism is
also an important medium for educational and cultural exchange,
community and regional co-operation and the promotion of international
understanding and goodwill. Despite
seasonal fluctuations, tourism is a 24-hour a day, seven-day-a-week
industry but it is also a fun industry providing for exciting careers in
a dynamic environment.
For
the first time in the Eastern Cape, a B Com Honours in Tourism programme
is being offered to postgraduate students wishing to steer their career
towards tourism. The programme is coordinated by the Centre for Tourism
Studies which was established at the University of Port Elizabeth
exactly a year ago. Core and elective modules are offered at the
University of Port Elizabeth, at the Educational Institute for Service
Studies (EISS) campus in Port Alfred and at the world famous Shamwari
Game Reserve.
The
Eastern Cape offers South African and international students a perfect
environment for studies in responsible tourism management. Currently
there are about 40,000 international students studying at South African
institutions of higher education. The Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan
area is situated in a biodiversity hotspot providing a perfect incubator
for producing world-class students. The programme will provide
postgraduate students with a multi-disciplinary and exciting learning
experience. The programme is underpinned with a strong value commitment
to supporting sustainable tourism development through social,
environmental and economic responsibility. The programme will also equip
students with appropriate knowledge, values and skills enabling them to
develop as entrepreneurs, managers, researchers, marketers, teachers and
strategists in the tourism sector anywhere in the world.
The
Director of the Centre for Tourism Studies, Peter Myles, in an interview
said, "Tourism is a multi-faceted industry impacting on almost every
sphere of society. Today many professional organisations are identifying
business opportunities in the travel & tourism industry requiring
specialist knowledge. Doctors, lawyers, accountants, bankers,
economists, consultants, insurance brokers, environmentalists,
sociologists, developers, architects, town planners, engineers and many
other professional firms are establishing specialist departments or
units to deal efficiently with tourism related issues. The firms with
specialist departments have a competitive advantage.
Myles
said, "Tourism is a remarkable industry capable of developing and
diversifying the economic base of countries, regions, cities and small
towns if properly managed. While there are significant investments made
by large companies in the tourism industry, the sector is underpinned by
