Our History
The Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology & Biotechnology was established at Rhodes University in 1989, as an amalgamation of two existing Departments, under the leadership of Prof John Duncan. Microbiology had developed as a sub-department of Botany, and established as an independent Department in 1974 under Prof David Woods. Biochemistry developed within the Chemistry Department with Prof Duncan appointed first head in 1984. The teaching of Biotechnology at the University commenced in 1986, in the Microbiology Department, and in 1995 Prof Peter Rose was appointed first Professor of Biotechnology. In 1993 the Leather Industries Research Institute was incorporated into the University as an associated Institute within the Department, and Leather Science is offered at the Post-graduate level.
