South African School
Bishops Preparatory School
At the foot of Table Mountain is without question South Africa's most beautiful city, Cape Town. Nestled under the mountain is Bishops, founded in 1849 by the newly consecrated Anglican Bishop, Robert Gray, a visionary deeply concerned with the state of public education. It is in pursuit of his vision and through a constant process of growth and development that Bishop Gray's Diocesan College (better known as Bishops) has continued to flourish over the last century and a half. Today's Bishops embodies a rich history and tradition which has made it one of the leading independent schools in Southern Africa. We welcome boys from throughout South and Southern Africa, Africa and the world, as we believe that a diversity of backgrounds enriches us and widens our perspectives on life. We are proud of the many achievements of our young men in their adult lives; of their exceptional contributions to academic, artistic, scientific, sporting, political and public life. Many have risen to become prominent politicians, legendary sportsmen, corporate executives, acclaimed scientists and inspiring professionals - even one prominent OD who was an astronaut!
Academic
Education in its broadest sense equips young people to assume many varied roles. Central to this broad education is the academic growth made possible by professional teachers deeply committed to both teaching and learning, addressing the issues of the day in the context of the present and the past. Acquisition of skills needed for success in today's world are important components of our offer, as are also the development of appropriate attitudes and a concern for social justice for all. We also aim to prepare all our boys for progression into tertiary education.
Cultural
Music, art and drama are a vital part of Bishops life. Boys are encouraged to join societies, take part in dramatic activities, take advantage of the rich tradition of music in all its forms - and generally extend their cultural experiences in a variety of different ways. As a well-established centre of excellence we have facilities including a fully operational theatre, a professional recording studio and a highly acclaimed music department.
Activities
Bishops offers more than 22 sports, ranging from individual to team sports so as best to suit the needs of each student. These sports include rugby, hockey, cricket, swimming, athletics, basketball, fencing, golf, rowing, squash, tennis, waterpolo and much more. Sport is compulsory, as we believe that physical activities contribute to healthy living, proper physical development, and provide boys in team sports the opportunity of developing a sense of camaraderie among the boys as well as enhancing their ability to work together
towards a common goal.
