St Benedict's Junior Preparatory School
Our Vision, Our Mission It is our desire that the young men who grow in our care will display spiritual maturity sufficient to contemplate a divine call to God's service and Christian life and to lead at some level in their church. St Benedict's strives to light the way to an understanding that we are blessed and fallible beings who are precious in the eyes of God and loved without condition. It is our desire that the young men who grow in our care will display moral maturity sufficient to lead as an example of righteousness, to understand what is really important; to demonstrate courage under fire; to make responsible decisions and to be men of integrity. St Benedict's strives to light the way to an understanding that each boy is a work in progress and that through God's grace has the potential to become Christ-like. It is our desire that the young men who grow in our care will display personal maturity sufficient to marry and fulfil God's purposes in responsible relationships as a husband and father. St Benedict's strives to light the way to an understanding that in and through Jesus, we may encounter the real and loving presence of God. It is our desire that the young men who grow in our care will display academic maturity sufficient to study; be a lifelong learner and communicate and articulate as a man. St Benedict's strives to light the way to an understanding that as unique and independent human beings we have the greatest chance of reaching our potential in a God-centred community. It is our desire that the young men who grow in our care will display social maturity sufficient to understand and respect others and to make a real contribution to society. St Benedict's strives to light the way to an understanding that love, justice and peace are achieved when living in right relationship with God, in solidarity with others and in harmony with creation. It is our desire that the young men who grow in our care will display economic maturity sufficient to hold an adult job and handle money. St Benedict's strives to light the way to an understanding that universal inclusivity demands that we reach out and care for all who experience impoverishment of any kind or circumstance. It is our desire that the young men who grow in our care will display physical maturity sufficient to work, play and protect a family. It is our desire that the young men who grow in our care will display constitutional maturity sufficient to fight for human dignity and the achievement of equality; non-racialism and non-sexism, the rule of law and universal adult suffrage.
Academic Programme
The Academic Programme is based on the National Curriculum and focuses on the specific learning styles of boys in order to meet their educational and developmental needs. The boys are given opportunities to experience success by learning through practical, interactive as well as formal activities. Classes average at 25 in size and are characterised by caring and dedicated teachers who strive to recognise the individuality of each boy and develop their potential. A balanced programme is followed where essential skills, knowledge and values are integrated into all aspects of learning, with the inclusion of sport, technology, computers, music, art, and culture to ensure all-round development. Specialist teachers take classes for computers, music, sport, religion and media guidance.
Sporting Programme
The emphasis is placed on the development of competent sporting skills through enjoyment, participation and confidence building. Life skills such as sportsmanship, co-operation and commitment are also fostered on the Sports Field. All classes have a weekly PT session during the school day and extra-mural sport and fixtures are offered from Grade 1 to 3. An annual Sports Day is held where every boy participates for his house, and events include sprints, high jump, long jump, javelin and shot put. Grade R, 1 & 2
The programme is run by Active Education and is geared to the developmental level of each age group. The focus is on advancing gross motor skills, balance and co-ordination through fun activities and ball games, as well as swimming in the Summer. (Swimming is not included for Gr R). Extra-mural cricket, soccer and rugby are available to boys in Grade 1 & 2, and inter-school tournaments are arranged. Team selection does not take place at this level as the emphasis is on participation and enjoyment. Mini cricket coaching is available in the Indoor Cricket Centre for boys from Grade R to Grade 2.
Grade 3
The programme is run by the Sports Staff of the Preparatory School as Grade 3 is included in the Prep Schools Sporting Fixtures. The Integrated Day enables boys to receive coaching in their selected sport according to the season. Cricket, rugby, swimming, athletics, hockey, soccer and tennis are offered during the school day as well as an extra-mural where teams are selected for matches against other schools. Facilities include an indoor cricket centre, indoor swimming pool and astro-turf. Cricket coaching, holiday clinics and action cricket is available for boys from grade 3 in the indoor cricket centre.
