Plymouth College of Art and Design





The College is located in Plymouth's city centre and has earned itself an enviable reputation as one of the main providers of vocational art and design education in Devon and Cornwall. The recent extension and refurbishment of the Tavistock Place building has moved all of the art and design provision onto one site, making an exciting and new learning environment for students.



The College is composed of four subject areas: 3D Design; Media and Photography; Design Communications and Fine Art, Diagnostic Drawing and Painting. The College has many links with local organisations ensuring that students are kept up to date with new developments within the art, design and media industries. The Viewpoint Gallery at the College allows students and local artists to exhibit their work.



The College offers higher education programmes on a full or part-time basis as well as a variety of part-time and short courses which are available to full-time students in addition to their main course.

Graphic Design



Foundation Degree Graphic Design - 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time



This course engages students in the key roles expected of a contemporary Graphic Designer. Basic Design Principles progress to exploration of the relationship to print production and motion graphics such as Web Design. Academic and theoretical concepts are integrated into the programme while design and professionalism is encouraged and supported by a work placement module. Modules include: graphic and digital design principles, design for print and motion graphics, typography and illustration.





BA (Hons) PhotoMedia and Design Communication - 1 year full-time



Through an exciting mix of module activities you will develop your learning and research skills, furthering your production skills and aesthetic appreciation of your chosen specialist subject: Graphic Design, Moving Image, Animation and Creative Media, Photography or Multimedia. Applications are welcome from graduates of related HNDs, Foundation Degrees, or students who have completed the second stage of a related degree programme.







3D Design



Foundation Degree Applied Arts - 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time



This course enables you to work across the whole range of available materials and scales or specialise in a specific discipline or material. The programme allows for individual responses to the creative challenges and aims to establish an understanding of a range of processes, materials, creative styles, techniques and practices through practical production and supporting investigative activities.



BA (Hons) Applied Arts - 1 year full-time



The programme emphasises the originality and individuality of the maker's vision, concepts and personal response to their chosen material and aims to prepare you for a career as a practicing craftsperson, artist or designer-maker. Applications are welcome from graduates of related HNDs, Foundation Degrees, or students who have completed the second stage of a related degree programme.



Foundation Degree Spatial Design - 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time



The course will equip you for the challenge of designing for stage, film, exhibitions, events, heritage, art, landscape and technology, areas where architecture, interior, graphics, drama and interpretation meet and combine. You will gain a thorough grounding in the principles of spatial design, whilst allowing particular specialisms to take place.The course aims at integration of practical designing and making skills and critical analysis, building a strong foundation for employment or for further study on the final year of a relevant BA (Hons) programme.







Animation



Foundation Degree Animation and Creative Media - 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time



This course is designed to provide an understanding of animation, new media and creative media styles, techniques and practices through practical productions and supporting investigation. You will be encouraged to develop your own visual language, production expertise and knowledge to meet your creative and professional aspirations and potentials.



BA (Hons) PhotoMedia and Design Communication - 1 year full-time

Fashion



Foundation Degree Fashion - 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time



Through this course you will learn the development of research design, production and promotion skills required by the dynamic fashion industry. In year 2 you will determine your own programme through the preparation of personal projects which can focus on a particular area of study in fashion, textiles or promotion. Promotional and College fashion shows are an important element of the course and provide students with valuable opportunities to develop their promotional and styling skills.



The course has an expanding network of professional links with industry, with projects and placements sponsored by local and national companies eg work experience in fashion features at The Times newspaper, styling placements at the Vidal Sassoon Colour Launch preview, work placements at Luella and Coppernob and promotional placements with West Country Publications.







Fine Art



Foundation Degree Fine Art Practice* - 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time



This course is designed to provide you with the opportunity to follow a 2D, 3D or multi disciplinary pathway. Modules can include: contextual studies, painting, sculpture, digital fine art, mixed media, lens based media, site specific art and international student exchange.

BA (Hons) Fine Art - 5 years part-time



A rich and challenging course designed to enable you to establish your own creative identity while formulating your most effective mode of practice. The programme combines studio work and critical studies and covers painting, sculpture and time based media, visual research and theoretical studies.







Photography



Foundation Degree Photography and Electronic Imaging - 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time



The programme establishes an understanding of photographic and creative media styles, techniques and practices through practical productions, supporting investigation and self-initiated modules in line with your individual vocational and design aspirations. Composition, lighting, production techniques and high quality professional practice will be essential elements in your experience.



BA (Hons) PhotoMedia and Design Communication - 1 year full-time

BA (Hons) Visual Communications* - 3 years full-time



The programme supports the growing interest in ecology and the environment, wildlife and natural history and the increasing coverage of these subjects in media and design. The course provides a dynamic link between Art, Media and the Sciences and aims to develop environmentally aware image makers and designers and equip students who have a particular environmental sciences focus with the skills of image making and effective communication, to support their own research.

Moving Image



Foundation Degree Moving Image - 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time



This course establishes an understanding of film and television, new media and creative media styles, techniques and practices. The programme is designed around a series of academic and production modules designed to encourage a creative use of moving image communication, film and video work. Film production techniques and well established links within the moving image industry are significant influences on the programme content and modular activities.

Multimedia



Foundation Degree Multimedia - 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time



An exciting mix of multimedia, new media and creative media styles, techniques and practices designed to establish an understanding through practical productions and supporting investigation . Modules include: graphic design and drawing for multimedia, computers and programming, web design, multimedia animation techniques, e-commerce and dynamic web design, multimedia design and authoring, 3D and video production and post production.
