Centre Academy
Centre Academy is the UK's oldest day school for children with specific
learning difficulties. The school teaches the skills and coping
strategies that enable students with dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, and dyspraxia
to succeed. The school also offers programmes and courses for gifted
'non-traditional learners' who profit from highly individualized
instruction. Class sizes are very small, usually no more than six to
eight; and students profit from a significant amount of one-on-one
instruction. Each student is tested and evaluated so that a programme
can be designed to meet that student's individual needs. Students are
placed according to need and current level of achievement, not on a
pre-conceived notion of where a student should be at a given age.
Teachers are dedicated professionals who have chosen to work with
children who have special educational needs.
English and mathematics form the core of the curriculum. Other areas
of study involve the humanities, science, foreign languages, ICT,
art, drama, music, and sport. Individual counselling, speech and
language therapy, and occupational therapy are available. There is a
wide range of extra-curricular activities and an after-school
Homework Club. The school works to develop a partnership between the
student, the school, and the family. To this end parent conferences
are a vital part of the continual assessment process.
Centre Academy follows the English National Curriculum through the
GCSEs. Older students have the option of continuing and earning the
American High School Diploma. There is an excellent record of
student admissions to universities in the UK and the US, as well as
to Sixth Form colleges.
Renowned for its happy and nurturing atmosphere, Centre Academy is a
congenial mix of British, American, European, and other
nationalities. Headquartered in a listed Edwardian building, the
school is located in central London with convenient public transport
serving all points in the city and also key suburban areas.
