Combine Learning and a Holiday
Located in the old cathedral city
of Truro, Cornwall, we offer one to one tuition from a highly experienced EFL
teacher. Teaching is tailor made to your requirements from beginner to advanced.
Your needs are paramount so we only cater for individuals or couples.
Guests stay in our comfortable
modern house with their own self-contained suite of large bedroom, sitting room
and bathroom. We have a Cornish Shrimper sailing boat and a kayak from which we
can explore the wonderful Cornish coastline.
Cornwall offers a huge variety of
attractions ranging from the Eden Project to the renowned Tate Gallery in St.
Ives.
Teaching and Learning
The key to successful progress with any language is speaking, and English is the
language you will speak when with Howard and I. We will correspond several times
before you arrive so that I have a prior idea of your standard and can prepare
accordingly. There is a great stress on conversation, talking brings language
alive and builds confidence.
Lessons will start at 10:00am, finishing at 1:00pm, with opportunities for short
breaks for food and drink when necessary!
You will begin with the reinforcement of the level that you already possess, and
you will find that you soon build upon it. I am not convinced from experience
that repetitive exercises are necessary very often.
A lesson will often develop spontaneously in reaction to something that may have
been mentioned on the news, or read in the broadsheet newspapers. It is
important that you use current vocabulary, and therefore it is vital to listen
to Radio 4, watch the television news and a variety of programmes.
Wherever you go you will be learning; going to the cinema, socialising and
chatting generally as well as eating together are all part of the learning
process, and practising your language skills.
A topic we will be working on will be set in advance, so that you can do some
vocabulary work before the lesson so that you feel more confident.
Creative writing is of great value, along with the examination of the use of
language and extension of vocabulary. I have extensive materials, which are
provided for you.
You will be taught what YOU feel you need and to YOUR strengths; it is
imperative that you feel comfortable and relaxed about your learning.
About Us
Your teacher, Gloria
Newlove, has the following qualifications:
- BA (Hons.) Swansea
University.
- Post-Graduate Certificate in
Education.
- Background in Counselling
skills.
- Accredited TEFL training.
Gloria has over 30 years'
teaching experience in schools and colleges. She firmly believes that learning
should be an enjoyable and memorable experience. An enthusiastic teacher, Gloria
uses a variety of techniques in her teaching. She loves English Language and
Literature, History, Art and Interiors (along with her Ragdoll cat, Minty!)
Howard was a Geography teacher until his recent retirement. He is dedicated to
his garden, believing in organic production, and as well as growing fruit and
vegetables, he has two beautiful Pekin bantams. Howard is very concerned about
climate change and sustainability as well as belonging to environmental
organisations to raise awareness of these issues.
A keen sailor, Howard has a Cornish Shrimper, moored nearby, and, for a small
fee, will take you out into the Carrick Roads, one of the largest natural bays
in Europe.
Our Home
We have a modern,
detached house with the accommodation spread over three stories,
which lends itself to comfortable homestays, as guests have their
own suite of rooms. Guests have sole use of the top floor. There is a
sitting room with a sofa, TV, DVDs and Videos. There is an
extensive selection of books, and a work desk. The
bedroom is very large. You also have a big, comfortable
bathroom, with a separate shower. There are beautiful panoramic views from these rooms. You will have fruit, biscuits, tea and coffee making facilities in
your sitting room, along with a microwave. We will not intrude. Your
floor is separate from our living accommodation, and your own
private space for you to relax in. You can order in delivered meals some evenings, and heat up food in
the microwave. If you want to eat out in Truro and unfortunately the
weather is bad or you wish to enjoy some wine, we will be happy to
take you down and collect you. We have an extensive list of pubs and
restaurants for snacks and/or meals. We will also make reservations
for you. There are sitting areas in the
garden for your use, if the evenings are fine, we sometimes have
barbecues; you are welcome to join us! EFL
Homestay
Breakfast is included
in the cost of the homestay. So that you can have a holiday in
addition to your learning, you will probably like to eat lunch and
dinner elsewhere if you have an excursion planned, or you may like
to go down into Truro for lunch and/or dinner. We can put together a
picnic lunch for you to take with you if required. Any kind of diet
can be catered for within reason.
Lessons will start at 10:00am, finishing at 1:00pm, with
opportunities for short breaks with drinks and food when
appropriate!
The cost includes all
your learning materials; you will have a file in which to keep all
your work and a record of your new vocabulary. A friendly and
constructive report of what you have covered and achieved will be
provided at the end of each week/course.
We usually take one or two adults who wish to take the opportunity
to improve their English, and combine it with a holiday in Cornwall.
The afternoons and evenings are your own.
We take guests
throughout the year. It could be that one of a couple/two friends
does not want to take English lessons; that is perfectly acceptable!
You will be warmly welcomed and we will do all that we can to make
sure that you feel at home with us.
We are also aware that you will need your own space and down time,
and respect that; after all, this is a holiday as well as working on
a language!
