The school accepts girls and boys of all nationalities from pre-school age up to the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The primary section consists of an early childhood class for three and four year old children and six primary classes. Placement is based on age, previous school experience, and level of attainment. Admission to secondary classes is based on a personal interview where possible and records from a student's previous school. Non-English speaking students are admitted at primary and secondary levels and given special English language support through Intensive English or English as an Additional Language (EAL) courses. Transfer to the full range of subjects takes place progressively when the student is ready. The curriculum is based on the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP). The school has offered the IB Diploma since 1975. These three programmes are designed to fulfil the school vision of combining intellectual rigour and high academic standards with a strong emphasis on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship. Mother tongue is valued highly at ISL and instruction is made available in many languages according to need. The Home Languages programme is an integral part of the curriculum from Reception to Year 13. Currently the school offers: Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. The school was purpose-built in the 1930s and has been refurbished with a library, laboratories, kitchen, dining hall and multi-purpose auditorium. Gunnersbury Park is adjacent with facilities for outdoor sports, and a gymnasium and swimming pool complex is nearby at the Brentford Leisure Centre. A door-to-door bus service covers most of central, west and south London, and underground stations are within ten minutes' walk. |
