Study at the School of MusicA Message from the Head of SchoolI am very proud of what we do in the School of Music here at Bangor and think we offer a learning environment second to none. The teaching staff of 12 full-time, 3 part-time members, together with graduate teaching assistants makes us one of the largest music departments in the British university system. This has considerable advantages in range of subject matter covered, both in teaching and research, and in the provision of a high level of individual guidance and care for our students. We admit some 50 to 55 students per year, generally after interview and an offer of B in Music, with other appropriate grades: equivalent levels are offered to students taking Scottish or Irish exams. We also welcome applications from mature students. I am relatively new here, and when I came in September 1998 I soon learnt this University stands for four things above all: student welfare, teaching excellence, research quality, and the "community university". I know these represent high ideals, and my colleagues and I in the School of Music try our best to live up to thern. Every day I realise afresh the enormous commitment and enthusiasm of our students, and, naturally, this inspires us as staff. I hope to welcome you on a visit here - do come and see for yourself. Bangor is an ancient cathedral city situated between Snowdon and the sea.
The region's main cultural and shopping centre....
Most of the University buildings and residences are a short walk from the city centre which has two modern shopping centres, and a good mix of national chain stores and smaller shops. There are also plenty of restaurants, cafe-bars and pubs. Bangor also has a theatre, cinema, swimming pool, and art gallery and museum.
Compact and convenient....
University buildings, halls of residence, Students' Union, shops, pubs, and restaurants are all within easy walking distance.
Cheaper and safer than most university cities....
Market research shows that the cost of living in Bangor is much lower than in many other parts of the United Kingdom and our hall fees compare favourably with those of other universities. According to The Independent's A - Z of Universities and Higher Education Colleges, Bangor is "one of the cheapest places in Britain". Easily accessible by road and rail....
The A55 expressway along the North Wales coastline means fast and easy access from the main United Kingdom motorway network. For example, it will take around 1.5 hours to travel to Bangor from much of North West England. If travelling by train, there are direct connections from many stations, including Crewe, Cardiff, and London (Euston). Ferry connections from Ireland to Holyhead are fast and frequent, and for those coming from further afield, Manchester International Airport is the nearest major airport. Bangor is about 1.5 hours drive from Manchester Airport. The surrounding area....
An area of outstanding natural beauty, with the mountains, lakes and forests of the Snowdonia National Park, and miles of dramatic coastline. Places to visit include historical towns and castles (Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Conwy Castles are all World Heritage sites) and scenic towns and villages in Snowdonia, (such as Llanberis, Beddgelert and Betws -y-Coed). Built by Thomas Telford, marks the gateway to the Isle of Anglesey. Visitors to Anglesey are promised safe Level and range of Courses University of Wales, Bangor has over 250 undergraduate degree courses and over 100 postgraduate programmes from which to choose. Undergraduate Bachelor Degrees
The Undergraduate degree courses normally run for 3 years, although some courses, for example Modern Languages run for 4 years. The three years taken at Universities in Wales and England to complete a degree course is shorter than at other Universities in Europe, where students spend 4 or 5 years working towards a degree.
Postgraduate Masters Degrees
We also have a range of postgraduate courses; eg MA, MSc and accept students who've completed their degree at Bangor, United Kingdom universities and in countries worldwide.
Research Degrees
On-going Research is central to every departments' activities and we are proud of the calibre of our staff and of their achievements. Our departments work on a wide range of research programmes and we have many opportunities for students to conduct both supervised and original research. Students can apply for MPhil or PhD research placements.
