School Introduction

Northern Michigan University, located in Michigan's unique Upper Peninsula, is a dynamic four-year, public, coeducational university which offers 180 degree programs to nearly 9, 400 undergraduate and graduate students.
Marquette, a city of 20, 000 residents found along the southern shore of Lake Superior, is NMU's home community. The 350-acre NMU campus is known for its safe, clean, friendly and natural environment. It features 52 facilities, including the newly constructed Science Complex, a state-of-the-art venue with more than two dozen laboratories, and the newly renovated Fine Arts and Art and Design buildings. NMU's campus also houses a university theater, an award-winning library, a university center, two art galleries, and a three-structure sports and recreation complex of which one is the Superior Dome, the world's largest wooden dome.

NMU is one of the largest notebook computer campuses in the United States with all full-time students receiving either a ThinkPad or iBook as part of tuition. The university has national and international awards for its innovative work in the area of technology in higher education. The university is also the site of the United States Olympic Education Center (USOEC), one of only four Olympic training centers in the nation and the only one designated as an education center.

ESL Program Introduction

Northern Michigan University’s full-time ESL program grants all ESL students conditional acceptance to the university. The program has three levels of instruction; Beginning, Pre-College, and Pre-Graduate School English. There is no minimum English requirement for admission and all students are given a laptop comuputer to use during their stay. Students attend daily courses and participate in structured activities designed to reinforce their English instruction.
The ESL program hosts an international student radio show and provides a domestic/international student mentoring program. The English, Modern Languages and Literature, Communication and Performance Studies, and Speech and Language Departments cooperate to provide students with comprehensive ESL training . The ESL Programs Office and International Affairs Office provide extra support for all ESL students.
