School Introduction
Penobscot School is a non-profit center for language learning and cultural exchange based in Rockland, on the coast of Maine. Our English immersion program provides a rich "bath" of language which students "absorb" through listening and active participation. The population of Rockland is 8, 000. The school is a short walk from museums, shops, restaurants, and is close to boating, swimming, fishing, golf, tennis, and forest nature walks. If you like to meet people and you want to relax and enjoy the exchange of ideas and knowledge in English conversation, then Penobscot School is for you. Students range in age from 21 to 65, and have come from 43 countries.
ESL Program Introduction
Classes emphasize listening and speaking skills. Study of grammar, vocabulary, idioms, and pronunciation helps students speak with greater confidence. Each student meets individually with a teacher several times during the course. These meetings, called tutorials, give students the opportunity to pursue specific subjects in greater depth. Each student chooses a topic for independent study and makes an oral presentation at the end of the course. Students organize afternoon and weekend activities with teachers, hosts and friends. Evening activities include occasional seminars by guest speakers.
