School Introduction

POLY Languages Institute (for over 35 years) has assisted tens of thousands of students from all over the world in their pursuit of the language proficiency needed for their educational goals, careers, and/or simply self-improvement. As the byproduct of our dedication and commitment to better educate and serve our students, we can assure our students with confidence that we are among the finest language training institutes.

POLY Languages Institute, Inc., founded in 1970, opened its first campus in Pasadena, CA and later added two additional campuses in Los Angeles, CA and Irvine, CA. Each campus enrolls about 150 students per session, many of whom transfer to colleges and universities upon completion of the POLY ESL program. Completion of the POLY ESL program is accepted in place of the TOEFL or other standardized English proficiency tests by many colleges and career schools.

ESL Program Introduction

We recognize that our students come from diverse cultures and academic backgrounds and that every student has different strengths and weaknesses, focuses and needs. Our curriculum therefore is structured into four distinct types of course:

* Reading and Writing - courses where students develop and sharpen their knowledge of English structure and grammar while practicing reading comprehension and developing their writing skills;
* Listening and Speaking - courses where the student will learn communicative functions that will help develop and sharpen their listening and conversational skills;
* Electives courses - where students may choose to study English Idioms or build their vocabulary;
* Test Preparation courses - where students may choose to study for the TOEFL, GMAT or GRE exams.

Housing/Accommodation Info

POLY offers student residence and homestay accommodation options. You may request the Accommodation Arrangement Service on the Application Form; payment is due at least ten (10) days prior to your planned move-in date so that appropriate accommodations can be arranged. You should receive the confirmation letter about five (5) days prior to your scheduled move-in date. You must be able to arrive to the arranged housing between 7:00 am - 10:00 pm. in order for you to move in on that same day. If not, you must arrange your own accommodation for the night near by the center you plan to attend and move into the arranged housing the next day. If you have requested the airport transfer service with us, we can recommend and help you to book a motel/hotel near by us. Student Residence, exclusively for POLY students, is available at all centers. The student may book only between 30 – 120 days at a time. The Irvine Student Residence is situated 5 miles from the Irvine Center and is easily accessible by bus. The Pasadena and Los Angeles student residences are located less than a mile (walking distance) and accessible by bus from their corresponding centers. Student residence rooms are furnished with a bed and a desk. The facilities also include T.V., internet access, refrigerator, and coin operated laundry machines (washer and dryer). Meals are not included, but students have full access to the kitchen. Homestay accommodations with English-speaking host families are available at all POLY Centers. Homestay arrangements generally include two meals per day (breakfast and dinner), a private room with a bed, a desk, and more depending on the host family. Homestays are selected so that they are located within 30 to 40 minutes by bus from the POLY Center. We strongly recommend that you visit and interview host families before you move in to the house. If you are not a local, we strongly recommend that you book for Student Residence for the first 30 days so that you have time to visit and choose the host family of your choice. We will introduce up to three (3) host families. Accommodation Arrangement Fee There is a non-refundable fee of $200 to arrange your accommodation. The type of housing is not guaranteed, and a student will be placed in available housing. This fee is waived one time when changing, within 40 days of your placement, from Student Residence to homestay or vice versa. The housing arranged is only for the duration of the student’s studies at POLY, and the student must move out within 30 days of the student’s last date of registration at the school. The arrangement fee must be paid before the processing of your accommodation arrangement request. We need at least 10 days prior to your desired move in date for us to arrange your housing. Security Deposit for Accommodations For both Student Residence and homestay, there is a security deposit of $100 which must be paid together with the accommodation arrangement service. The security deposit will be held by the school and paid within 10 days to the parties agreed by the student and the landlord. Should there be a dispute between the student and the landlord, the school will hold on to the money until settled between the parties. The student must request refund only after the student has moved out of the place and within 30 days of the student’s last day at POLY. For Student Residence, a new bed set (linen, blanket, and pillow) for the size of a twin bed will be provided and charged against the student’s security deposit in the amount of $65 unless the student provides his/her own bed set at the time of check-in. Rental Rates For Student Residence, the student may book only between 30 - 120 days at a time. The rent for the period booked is due 10 days prior to the student’s scheduled move-in date. There is a rebooking fee of $35 for changing rooms. For homestay, the first month’s rent is due 10 days prior to the student’s scheduled move-in date. Thereafter, the rent is due on a monthly basis by the move-in date of each month. The monthly rate for homestays is subject to change, and the payment policy for each homestay may vary.
