THE MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING PROGRAM
at Bard College
New York
|
The Master of Arts in Teaching Program at Bard College recognizes what many studies have demonstrated: that the classroom teacher plays the most influential role in student learning in our schools.
In the MAT Program, you will pursue rigorous graduate-level study, both within an academic discipline and in the field of education. As a student teacher, you will work in public classrooms alongside mentor teachers who are committed to realizing the best hopes of our schools. |
Overview The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program at Bard College responds
to an urgent need for change in public education, a change that state
mandates in the form of high-stakes standardized tests will never be
able to accomplish. This transformation requires teachers who can help
high school and middle school students develop the thoughtful
self-determination that builds from a genuine enthusiasm for learning,
an enthusiasm that results in the ability to apply the methods of
inquiry and bring an understanding of critical concepts to the pursuit
of living more fully and responsibly. In its commitment to fostering
change, the MAT Program engages M.A.T. degree
students, Bard College
faculty, and
public school teachers in
advancing the best ideas about teacher preparation and the improvement
of secondary and postsecondary education. The core of Bard s yearlong MAT Program is an integrated
curriculum leading to
a master of arts in teaching degree and a teaching certificate for
grades 7 12 in one of four areas: English, mathematics, biology, or
history. In future years the program will be expanded to include
certification in other fields, including art, chemistry, foreign
languages, and music. The program is unique in its approach, requiring
advanced study in the academic disciplines as well as complementary
field-based study of issues in teaching and learning. Having completed
an undergraduate degree in their chosen field, incoming students
continue their studies in that field. Concurrently, MAT students take
education courses that challenge them to apply the results of research
and pedagogical analysis to the actual work of teaching. Linked to
advanced study in the field, the education curriculum helps students
consider how they learn, and how alternative approaches to teaching and
learning provide broader access to academic competence. Combined with
student-teaching experiences spread over the full academic year, and the
active participation of mentor teachers and MAT faculty advisers, the
program s instructionally innovative courses provide the basis for
critical reflection about educational practice.
Supporting Programs Bard College has a longstanding interest in initiating and supporting
programs that encourage teachers and students to think about education
in new ways. Following are descriptions of four Bard initiatives that
most directly support the MAT Program s goals and approaches to learning
and teaching.
Curriculum
The Master of Arts in Teaching Program at Bard College
takes place over a full calendar year, from June to June. It includes
integrated course work, student teaching, and independent research. The
course work and fieldwork are organized in a sequence of four 10-week
quarters. A weeklong orientation session precedes the summer quarter.
From September through May-that is, during the fall, winter, and spring
academic quarters-MAT students spend 20 weeks in public school
classrooms. The intersession, which takes place during the week between
the winter and spring quarters, is devoted to courses that not only
satisfy state certification requirements, but also immerse students in
innovative approaches to teaching and learning in the disciplines. The
concluding week of the program provides time for students to present
their final projects. Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month
program, MAT graduates receive a master of arts in teaching degree and a
New York State Initial Certificate in Adolescent Education (grades 7-12)
within the elective discipline.
